I’m not the deepest guy, and this song didn’t make me cry, quit my job or start eating granola, but I just thought the lyrics were really good – which isn’t something you hear everyday. I can only hear the best radio station in America 2 days a week when I visit my Client outside of Philly. It’s called WMMR (Means More Rock) and I found out the reason they play such great music is because they are independently owned. There isn’t a big global conglomerate making sure they play the same top songs over and over again. That means they don’t have to play “Clocks” by Coldplay or “Time of your life” by Greenday over and over again until I want to jump out the car door. They actually play songs that aren’t Top 100 hits. You’d think they were paying me to write this.

Anyway, these lyrics are from Tom Petty, and next to his excellent appearance on The Simpsons, this is some of his best stuff…

The Last DJ

Well, you can't turn him into a company man,
you can't turn him into a whore.
And the boys upstairs just don't understand anymore.
Well, the top brass don't like him talking so much,
and he won't play what they say to play.
And he don't wanna change what don't need to change.

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say, hey hey hey.
And there goes your freedom of choice,
there goes the last human voice.
There goes the last DJ.

Well, some folks said they're gonna hang him so high
cos you just can't do what he did.
There's some things you just
can't put in the minds of those kids.
As we celebrate mediocrity
all the boys upstairs wanna see
how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free.

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say, hey hey hey.
There goes your freedom of choice,
there goes the last human voice.
There goes the last DJ.

Well, he got a new station down in Mexico
and sometimes it would kinda come in.
And I'll bust a move and remember how it was back then.

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
and says what he wants to say, hey hey hey.
There goes your freedom of choice,
there goes the last human voice.
There goes the last DJ.
